Lower Extremity Edema Management
September 19-20, 2009

Lower Extremity Edema Management is an intense 2-day seminar that focuses on developing a strong foundation of knowledge in the practice of edema management.  Candace Kirkpatrick OT(R) is our guest speaker and will be covering important topics from edema vs. lymphedema to treating the 'complicated' leg.  The anatomic structures and physiology of the circulatory and lymphatic system will be reviewed.  Participants will have an opportunity to practice ABIs using Doppler machines and view a PPG demonstration.  Vendors from 3M Canada, Smith & Nephew and Market Drugs Medical will be present to offer participants with hands-on practice applying compression wraps and exposure to compression products and stocking aids.
The seminar is designed for healthcare professionals who work in clinical settings which require assessment and treatment of lower leg edema and would like to further develop their skills and clinical reasoning. Prospective attendees include experienced clinicians who wish to update their skills and learn about best practice treatment. Clinicians or current OT students who have an interest in edema management or who have not had the clinical/education opportunity in this area would also be appropriate for this seminar.

The goals of the seminar:

  • Understand the different types of edema
  • Know what treatments are effective
  • Indications and contraindications of compression therapy
  • Be able to complete a lower leg and vascular assessment
  • Be able to choose an appropriate compression wrap
  • Become aware of available stockings, aids and current AADL policy

Early bird registration deadline is August 15, 2009!

Coffee and lunch breaks will be incorporated, as snacks and refreshments will be provided during the day. Please note that participants are expected to arrange their own lunch for the two day workshop.
