Advanced Pain Science and Recovery Seminar

This one day course designed for health care professionals provides instruction and practice in evidence-informed assessment and treatment of people with complex pain problems. Learn to better identify patients requiring more than routine treatment. Gain practice in the use of self-report questionnaires and in providing brief pain neurophysiology within treatment sessions. Practice guiding your patient in breathing, body awareness and self-regulation during treatment interventions and functional restoration activities.

This course emphasizes group interactions, problem solving and the practical application of assessment and self-management techniques. Clinical treatment teams receive substantial benefits by completing the course together.

Course Objectives:

  • Identifying patients requiring more than 'routine' treatment
    • Physical assessment techniques of peripheral and central sensitization
  • Effective use of pain self-report questionnaires to track and improve outcomes
  • Explore the role of manual therapy and modalities
  • Effective 'brief' pain neurophysiology education
  • Teaching breathing techniques
    • For pain management
    • To wind-down sensitization during treatment
  • Teaching clients to attend with broad awareness during recovery exercises
  • Treatment planning and exercise/activity progressions

Prerequisites: (highly recommended) A strong foundation in pain science and a clear understanding of a pain neuromatrix model. Course participants should be actively involved with pain management and/or previous completion of Pain Science and Recovery, Explain Pain or the Virtual Pain Symposium (CPA-PSD offering)

Coffee and lunch breaks will be incorporated, as snacks and refreshments will be provided during the day. Please note that participants are expected to arrange their own lunch for the one day workshop.
