Protecting the Pelvic Floor and Pelvis during Pregnancy and Delivery

This 4-hour course is targeted to Prenatal Educators (physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, doulas) and physiotherapists involved in treating pregnant women or pelvic health physiotherapists wishing to broaden their knowledge and abilities to help women ensure good pelvic health during pregnancy and the birthing process.

Upon completion of this workshop participants will have more answers for the women they work with during the prenatal phase by:

  • Increased knowledge of pelvic floor anatomy and impact of vaginal delivery on the pelvic floor
  • Know how to instruct pelvic floor muscle training during pregnancy – beyond Kegels
  • Have evidence based approach about when to recommend perineal massage with methods for effective application
  • Have evidence to support delivery positions, breathing and pushing techniques that minimize pelvic floor trauma
  • Have techniques, postures and movement strategies to improve pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. Have good understanding of when to refer to a physiotherapist for pelvic girdle pain

The workshop will involve short lecture sessions with active learning through exercise and working with each other. There will be no perineal nor internal assessment however, participants should be prepared for external palpation of coccyx, ischial tuberosity and lateral external part of pelvic floor through loose clothing.

Attire – please wear loose work out type pants, no jeans
