Interdisciplinary Wound Care: Taking a Closer Look at Dressings, Beds and Seating Surfaces

Presented by: Nicole Thompson

Course Description:

This two-day workshop is designed for allied health and nursing professionals from both inpatient and community perspectives. We will explore the foundations of wound management principles and best practices and then utilize a hands-on, workshop approach for application of knowledge. Each member of the interdisciplinary team will learn about what their profession can contribute and gain perspective on the roles of the other team members.

Participants will learn about wound physiology and assessment and how the dressings interact with the wound base. They will also learn about physical forces (pressure, friction, shear) and how to assess/treat those factors that are impairing healing. Clinicians will also have an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a wound assessment lab, dressing lab, and mattress/cushion pressure mapping lab.

Course objectives:

  1. Understand wound characteristics, physiology, and repair and apply to local wound care (dressing selection, debridement, infection).
  2. Understand physiology of tissue damage from physical forces and be able to assess and treat
  3. Understand the characteristics of therapeutic equipment (cushions, mattresses, seating systems) and apply to client care plan
  4. Understand and apply the wound management principles to bariatric client care, heel ulcers and surgical clients.
