Pharmacology and its Effects on Occupational Performance

Audience:
This course is intended for Occupational Therapists at any stage in their career.
 
Course Description:
This is a two day weekend course that will include:
- introduction to basic concepts of drug therapy and drugs commonly used by clients in rehabilitation settings
- an overview of factors affecting client medication choices, medication taking behaviours, metabolism and response
 
The focus will be the relationship between medication use and occupational performance.
 
Goal Statement:
This course will provide participants with an understanding of basic pharmacological concepts and their relationship to occupational performance issues relating to medication adherence, clients’ responses to medications and metabolism.
 
Objectives:
At the end of the course participants will be able to identify:
1. Basic pharmacological concepts
2. Medication issues that might affect interventions
3. The implications medication choices may have on occupational performance
 
Occupational Therapy Outcomes:
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
1. Understand the impact of a variety of medications on occupational performance
2. Describe and understand basic medication lists
3. Articulate medication issues for specific client conditions
4. Provide basic counseling to clients/families regarding medication issues that impact function
 
Transferable skills:
-Improved ability to function as an interdisciplinary team member
-Improved ability to grade therapeutic interventions considering potential medication effects on occupational performance.
